Our Legacy

“An optimist is someone who goes after Moby Dick in a rowboat and takes the tartar sauce with him.”
Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker

How can we give our children this type of positive attitude?  We want our children to tackle life’s challenges with a positive “I’ll Make It Happen” attitude.

As your children grow up they begin to learn about themselves, their environment, and how they fit into this world.  They find out about their likes and dislikes, what they are good at, and what takes extra work on their part.  They are on a journey of discovery and you are their navigator.

As parents and concerned adults it is our responsibility to give them the tools they need to be successful.  Those tools include:

  1. Empower them with strong, positive character traits (determination, honesty, patience, etc.)
  2. Teach them how to set and achieve their goals
  3. Show them how to take ownership education

We will not always be physically with our children as they go on their life’s journey.  However, if they understand and use these tools, our children will have a good chance of becoming happy, caring and responsible adults.

Their success in life will result from how they deal with life’s joys, sorrows and lessons.  Our children will make mistakes and learn from them.  They will learn that life can be a series of good decisions and good consequences.  Or, it can be just the opposite—poor decisions and poor consequences.

The above tools will give them an excellent chance at meeting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for them.  Importantly, they will remember that you are their “port in the storm”—their navigator.

Suggestions for implementation:

  1. Make a list of the top five character traits that you think are important.
  2. Compare your list with other family members.
  3. Combine the lists and as a family highlight one characteristic per week to work on.

Questions for discussion:

  1. What does educational ownership mean to you?
  2. How can you use the goal-setting principles discussed here to take ownership?
