5 Ways to Overcome Negative Thinking
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Negative thinking does not discriminate. It affects all people without regard to their age, sex, color, religion or nationality. Negativity affects a person’s health, their relationships with family and friends, their job or school performance, and their outlook for their future.
How can you help your teenager remain positive in a world filled with negative influences?
All teenagers must deal with negative peer pressure. As they grow and develop they will be making life-altering decisions on a full range of social issues – smoking, sex, drugs, leaving home, their careers, etc. It is essential that teenagers develop good decisions making skills, have a positive outlook for their future and a strong sense of self-worth. With those tools your teenager will have a much better chance of overcoming the negative influences.
Here are some ideas to help your teenager overcome negative thinking.
- Change the focus. Find one thing they do well and build on that strength. It may be skateboarding, cooking or working with animals. Help them find resources – people, books, seminars, etc. to further their passion in that area.
- Put a book of quotes in the bathroom. Some very smart people have given great advice with a minimum of words. At dinner have fun discussing some of the quotes they liked. Ask your teenager questions about the quote and listen – really listen – to their answers.
- Remember the Babe. Babe Ruth said: “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”
- Rome wasn’t built in a day. Help them break large, seemingly impossible tasks into doable parts. Then, take action.
- Be thankful. Help your teenager develop a view that their cup is half full rather than half empty.
Please note that if negative feelings persist you may want to seek the advice of a mental health professional.

Vacation
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m back from a fabulous week’s vacation on the coast of Maine. We were on Bailey’s Island which is just south of Brunswick, ME and can be reached by a bridge. We rented a small, unpretentious cabin about 75 yards from the rocky coast. Long walks, lobsters, grandkids, good friends, reading and beautiful weather filled my day. It was a wonderful week, but I’m glad to be back and energized to do more to help children.
